Margarita Luti (”La Fornarina”) was both the predilect model and the mistress of Raffaello Sanzio (1480-1520) and is depicted in at least four of his most popular works. The painter was so infatuated with her that he was unable to dedicate himself properly to decorate the Villa Farnesina, as he had been commissioned, until Margarita was allowed to come to live at his side. He also managed to delay what would have been an extremely convenient marriage with a cardinal’s daughter as long as he could - actually, until his very death. Speaking of which, it is believed that his death was caused by “a night of excessive sex with [Margarita] Luti, after which he fell into a fever” and being too embarrassed to tell his doctors the cause of his sickness he was given a wrong remedy and died.
ALSO: It is speculated that Margarita Luti suffered from breast cancer due to the deformity and strange colouring of one of her breasts in the portrait titled “La Fornarina”, the same breast which she appears touching or hiding in other paintings.
